In retrospect, I probably would have been better off dropping it at the halfway point. Up until the final couple episodes, I was prepared to give this show somewhere in the B-grade range, but the ending really poisoned it for me. But in the end, the storyline really fell off the rails into a big open-ended mess: a conclusion with any conclusion at all. There were ups and there were downs, but I persevered through it all, perhaps giving the show more of a pass that I normally would because I wanted to watch a fantasy show as break from all the silly high-school comedies that have pervaded 2010. Series Final Grade: C - There are some significant issues that I have complained about throughout watching this show, notably the ungainly combination of wacky humor and serious drama, which resulted more in a lumpy stew of a show rather than a smooth tasty soup. And what's the deal with Ryner *dying* and coming back to life without explanation - is this all a post-death dream we are seeing now? Maybe I missed a few key points here and there, perhaps it is all much better explained in the books and did not translate well to the anime, but I feel so let down by this series in the end. Instead, in the final three episodes it seems like they rushed to vomit out a whole bunch of new crap (Ryner's father? Weaver of All Formulas? Sion's monster army?), just to confuse matters even more. Not even a HINT of closure on a single of the concurrent storylines. I feel fuckin' CHEATED, having endured through half a year of episodes only to have everything open-ended like this. You want more? You gotta read the books in Japanese. My thoughts: The end? Seriously, that's it? The show has opened up a dozen different cans of worms, loose plotlines tangled everywhere, absolutely NOTHING is resolved at all! This whole 24-episode series has been nothing more than one extended prologue, it seems.with no sequel in sight. Ryner wakes up in his prison cell, Ferris busts him out, and Ryner vows to save his friend Sion (now on the warpath) from the dark spirit that consuming him. But when it comes to the final blow, Sion is unable to kill Ryner, imprisoning him instead. Legend of Legendary Heroes Episode 24 - Sion and Ryner are engaged in a fight to the death, Sion aided with the help of biological monstrosities he's been creating in private. Have I really been watching this show for so many months that I can be this confused? The whole episode is upbeat and sunny and smiles.until a sudden out-of-the-blue quick cut at the end when Sion is battling Ryner to the death. My thoughts: Did I skip and episode or a dozen somewhere? It's like nothing from the previous episode is addressed at all (then again, it's not as if anything from the previous episode had much to do with anything in the previous 21 either), as a now-alive Ryner is all puppies-and-roses happy with Sion. Sion goes to pick up Ryner alone, then attacks him. The big party goes off without a hitch, Ryner setting off grand fireworks. Along with all of Sion's friends and subordinates, they are also working like crazy for a big birthday celebration for Sion. Legend of Legendary Heroes Episode 23 - Ryner is working like crazy on paperwork for Sion for several days, to the point of exhaustion. Ridiculously exhaustive review: Anime Evo Review Meanwhile, Sion is in conflict with his own self on whether or not he should kill Ryner. Ryner "awakens" in a strange dream world where he meets up with Weaver of All Formulas, is saved by the spirit of his mother, and then wakes up in bed with Ferris. Ferris tries to retrieve the body from the killer, but fails. Legend of Legendary Heroes Episode 22 - Ryner is dead. At this point in the series, you're either still watching it (so you already know what's going on and a long detailed run-down of everything is not really needed), or don't care. For a series that I've already been watching for several episodes, there's not much of a reason to go into much detail. Rather than the longer reviews with all sorts of pictures and such, this is just a quick summary review. Matthigh Anime Summary Review: Legend of Legendary Heroes Episodes 22, 23, and 24 (finale)
